USA Student Visa — Requirements & Process

Applying for a student visa to the USA is straightforward when all documents are prepared correctly. Once you receive your university admission, you can begin your visa application.

For 2026, Indian students applying for a USA student visa (F-1/M-1) must obtain the I-20 form, complete the DS-160 form, pay a $185 application fee and a $350 SEVIS fee. Due to 2025 policy changes, applicants must list five years of social media history and set profiles to public. The process requires an interview at a U.S. embassy/consulate in India.

As of early 2026, appointment wait times in India can range from 1 to 3 months, with relatively faster and more consistent slots often available in New Delhi compared to Mumbai or Kolkata. Visa processing after interview is typically around 5 to 7 working days in straightforward cases.

Key Visa Requirements

  • Unconditional Offer Letter / Form I-20 from a SEVP-approved institution
  • SEVIS (I-901) Fee Payment Receipt
  • Completed DS-160 Visa Application Confirmation Page
  • Proof of Funds (as per financial requirements on the I-20)
  • English Language Proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent)
  • Valid Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay)
  • Visa Appointment Confirmation & Interview at U.S. Embassy/Consulate

USA Study Abroad FAQs

Students need to know the total tuition, living expenses, and health insurance costs. They often look for information on Assistantships (TA/RA) or scholarships to reduce the financial burden. At Stack Learn, we provide transparent cost breakdowns and guide you toward suitable funding options.

Given the trend towards test-optional policies, many universities no longer require the GRE/GMAT. Your GPA, work experience, and overall profile may be sufficient for admission. We help you identify which universities are test-optional and advise on the best strategy.

International students can work up to 20 hours/week during semesters on-campus. For off-campus work, you’ll need CPT (Curricular Practical Training) authorization for internships and OPT (Optional Practical Training) for post-study employment. We guide you through the complete process.

Key strategies include proving financial stability, demonstrating “non-immigrant intent” (plans to return to India), and clearly articulating why you chose a particular US university. Our mock interview training and visa counselling prepares you thoroughly.

Fall intake (August) typically offers better internship and networking opportunities, a wider choice of courses, and aligns with more scholarship deadlines. However, Spring (January) is also viable for many programs. We help you choose the best intake based on your profile.
